Why Local Sports Star nominee Peter Eliott has the walking world at his feet

PETER Elliott has the athletics world at his feet, winning his second successive NSW Short Walks Championships while maintaining his brilliance over his rivals in his age group.

PETER Elliott has the athletics world at his feet, winning his second successive NSW Short Walks Championships while maintaining his brilliance over his rivals in his age group.

The Quakers Hill local won the boys under-10 event over 1200 metres in 5: at Penrith.

Last year, Peter smashed the Australian record in the under-9 boys, clocking 3:15.36 seconds to erase the previous mark by 9.17 seconds, a feat Little Athletics NSW is to acknowledge later this year.

This week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star Award is multi-talented, being a part of the successful cricket and football teams for NSW Sydney Hurricanes under-10s and the Winston Hills Bears Football Club.

Peter has had a successful athletics season, taking bronze at the Australian Race Walking Championships in Canberra in March, while helping NSW win gold in the team event.

He effortlessly moved up in the under-14 division where he took silver in the handicap trophy.

“I have been race walking for three years and what made me do it was my sister was training,” Peter said.

“I started to try it and look where I am now.

“It’s hard to split between race walking and soccer as my favourite sports.

“My biggest sporting achievements include coming first at NSW and breaking the national record in 2016.

“I also won the NSW state road walks, the federation title in Canberra, I got third at the NSW state titles in 2017.

“My under-12 soccer team, Winston Hills, finished runners-up in the Sate Cup grand final and my Hurricanes team won the winter cricket comp in June.”

Peter also runs a cracking training and playing schedule throughout the week including trips to Tempe, Penrith, Chipping Norton and Woy Woy alternatively every Saturday after football in the mornings.

“I work out what day its on and what time and I go from there with the help of my mum,” said Peter of his hectic schedule which includes cross country, touch footy and swimming.

Peter also plays the saxophone and is looking for a new walking coach as he looks forward to starting at the new Ponds Little Athletics Club, where his dad Mark is the president.
