ELIZABETH Doughty has grasped her opportunity with both hands to make a successful debut in the under-11 girls State Softball Championships.

The 10-year-old Rouse Hill Rams player helped Hornsby District Softball Association emerge runners-up at the highly-competitive tournament at Blacktown.

Elizabeth, our nominee for the Local Sports Stars Sporting Spirit Award, has considerable potential to be successful at softball, as this is only her second year in the sport.

The Oakhill Drive Public School pupil was among the three Rams players who represented the Hornsby under-11 squad, a tribute to their progress this season.

“Playing for the Hornsby Rep team in the State Championships and coming runners up was exciting,” the Castle Hill local said.

“We played teams all over NSW and last year we came sixth so we were a lot better (this year).

Elizabeth started playing softball two years ago after attending a ‘come and try’ day at Centenary Park.

“Ever since then she has loved the sport and looks forward to playing each weekend throughout summer for the Rouse Hill Rams,” her dad and Rouse Hill Rams softball president Michael Doughty said.

“She also helps out with her school’s PSSA team with the skills she has learned from both the Rams and the Hornsby representative team.”

Elizabeth, who loves music and watching movies, hopes she will be picked for the Hornsby team soon.

“I have been playing for two years after I tried out at a ‘come and try’ day after soccer one day,” Elizabeth said.

“We get to have a try at all positions so everyone gets a turn and it is fair with the Rams.

“For reps I play in the outfield and third base and I like playing on the bases best, that’s where all the action is.

“I like playing for the rep team so I hope I will get picked to play for Hornsby.

“One day I would like to play for Australia.”

“I like playing for Rams because I get to play with some of my friends whom I also play soccer with.

“It would be good if we had more players and more teams so we have more kids the same age playing in the same teams.”
