Midfielder goes from school champ to playing for Matildas

Being one of the best young footballers in the country isn’t easy.
Bethany Gordon’s talent has taken her everywhere from China with the Young Matildas to Canberra with W-League side Canberra United, but it’s also taken her away from her family.
“It was very exciting to come home from China and then move to Canberra to play for Canberra United,” the 17-year-old midfielder from Schofields said.
“It was hard though because I have such a close family and other than the camps for Young Matildas I had never been away from them for an extended time frame.”
Bethany’s road to becoming a professional footballer has been paved with success.
As well as representing her state several times, she was named Seven Hills High School’s Rookie of the Year and in 2015 was awarded Player of the Final in the prestigious Bill Turner Cup.
But Bethany says getting to pull on the green and gold was a standout achievement. “I felt very proud and honoured to represent my country. It was very exciting to be chosen to go to China to play in the World Cup qualifiers.
“It was a lot of work going to camps and training hard but it was all worth it to be chosen in the Young Matildas.”
Bethany is the latest nominee for the Rouse Hill Times Local Sports Stars award, which are on until August 31. Prizes will be awarded to athletes aged 18 and under across four categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual and Young Sporting Spirit Team. There is also a Service To Sport category. “Your Local Club is proud to support this program, which shines a light on elite young athletes and the volunteers,” ClubsNSW chief executive Anthony Ball said.
