Sophie Wilson is a standout among standouts.

The 15 year old from Castlereagh is one of the Penrith Junior Paddling Program’s top athletes- despite only picking up the sport last year.

She recently returned from New Zealand where she was on tour with the National Talent Squad.

Sophie dominated her competition to take out the K1W under-16s at the New Zealand National Championships and the K1W Intermediate at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships.

“This is a wonderful achievement for Sophie,” assistant co-ordinator of the Penrith Junior Paddling Program Tim Anderson said.

“Especially considering that she has only been kayaking for just over one year. Her rapid improvement is likely to put her in good stead for National Junior Team selection in future years.”

Sophie is the latest nominee for the Penrith Press Local Sports Stars award.

The awards are on until August 31. Prizes will be awarded to athletes aged 18 and under across four categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual and Young Sporting Spirit Team. There is also a Service To Sport category.

“Your Local Club is proud to support this program, which shines a light on elite young athletes and the volunteers,” ClubsNSW chief executive Anthony Ball said.
