They say it’s easier to get to the top than it is to stay there, but Nicholas Dang has been camped out at the peak of Australian junior hurdles for a while.
The 16-year-old from Oatlands has consistently been one of the best sprint hurdlers in the country over the last four years.
After a string of podium finishes at the state and national level, Nicholas opened 2018 with a gold medal at the NSW Junior Championships in February before earning silver at the Australian Championships the following month.
His stellar results then saw him selected in the under-18 Australian team to compete at the Oceania Melanesian Athletics Championships, where he claimed silver in the 110m hurdles.
Despite the great result, Nicholas says he was disappointed not to get the gold.
“Personally I was quite disappointed with my race, having known I wasn’t able to execute the race that was reflective of my training leading into the championship.
“However I had to put into perspective how difficult but rewarding the season had been for me.”
Nicholas is the latest nominee for the Parramatta Advertiser Local Sports Stars awards, which are on until August 31.
Prizes will be awarded to athletes aged 18 and under across four categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual and Young Sporting Spirit Team. There is also a Service To Sport category.
