A youthful Cumberland Nepean Softball Association squad has used last weekend’s under-19 women’s state softball championships as a learning experience after finishing the competition in third place.

Cumberland Nepean were one of 10 teams to battle it out at Blacktown International Sportspark for the Ruth Preddey trophy, with Hornsby District Softball Association ultimately crowned champions after beating Sutherland Shire 7-1 in the final.

Although they didn’t come away with the title, it was an improved showing for Cumberland Nepean after finishing seventh at last year’s competition.

The team split their pool games 2-2 and earned a 5-3 quarter-final win over Penrith City before their demise, going down to Hornsby in the semi-finals.

With only two top-age players in the squad, the future is looking bright.

“Most of us can come back next year and give it a good crack,” pitcher Charli Orsini said.

“It was a great experience because all the (older) pitchers and batters are all very great players.”

The action continues over the long weekend with Blacktown hosting the over-35s mens and women’s state events.
