LSS nominee Angelina Genford bursts into international junior cricketing stardom

Angelina Genford is a part of the exciting new generation of Australian women cricketers who can excel in both the indoor and outdoor versions.

ANGELINA Genford is a part of the exciting new generation of Australian women cricketers who can excel in both the indoor and outdoor versions.

Still only 16, the Picnic Point all-rounder is already an Indoor Under 17 World Cup winner, having starred for Australia n New Zealand last September.

The Bankstown Cricket Club star took out the Australian Player of the Tournament Award there and was ranked third for the MVP award in the world.

Angelina is this week’s nominee for the Junior Sports Star Award in the Local Sports Star competition. “I love the challenges the sport gives me and the mental game also as no game is ever the same,” said Angelina, who nursed a broken toe at the indoor nationals.

Australian indoor cricket coach Denise Jenkins said Angelina is a special talent.

“She is a very handy player and was the backbone of the Australian U17 team,” Jenkins said. “She was outstanding in Christchurch and is very easy to coach.

“She is a such a beautiful young lady who can go on to play for the 21 and under national team.”

Angelina, who trains six days a week during the season, helped NSW Metro U18 women’s side lift the 50 overs title in Bendigo in January.

“I want to play outdoor cricket for my state and country as I feel this would be a huge honour,” Angelina said.

“I like to thank my mum and my coaches, especially Byron Hackshall, who has believed in me and trained me since I was nine.”
