Local Sports Stars: Liverpool Swim Club junior boys team win gold in medley relay
Liverpool Swim Club’s 11-12 years boys team beat the odds and emerged as victors at the Swimming Metropolitan Southwest Championships. They’ve been nominated for a Local Sports Star award.
From their position in lane zero, the four boys who make up Liverpool Swim Club’s 11-12 years boys team knew they weren’t the favourites to win their event.
But that didn’t stop Owen Thai, Lachlan Pham, Athan Tzanis and Felix Vuong from swimming their hearts out in the 4x50m medley relay at the Swimming Metropolitan Southwest Championships in June.
Their efforts and tenacity paid off, with the boys not only winning the event, but also breaking a record set more than 10 years ago.
The team has now been nominated for a Local Sports Star award in the Team of Excellence category in recognition of their dedication and sporting achievements.
A Liverpool Swim Club spokesman said the boys’ record-breaking performance was a significant feat.
“The team that had set the initial record, those boys ended up national level swimmers.”
The spokesman said the boys had worked hard, attending up to six two-hour training sessions each week, some of which required 5am starts.
“These boys are all very dedicated to what they’re doing,” the spokesman said.
He said their success came down to “four very special individual swims” that, combined, became a stellar team performance.
Each team member has also qualified to compete at the NSW state championships in September. The Local Sports Stars competition recognises the achievements of young athletes. It is sponsored by Featherdale Wildlife Park and Bankstown Sports. Nominate at localsportsstars.com.au.
