Maddison Heath lives and breathes baseball.
At 17, the Holsworthy athlete is making waves in the sport, playing against the nation’s best and coaching the next generation of junior baseball players.
Having represented NSW in the under-16s state titles for the past five years, Maddison has her sights set on the highest levels of the game.
This Easter she won a gold medal with the open-age women’s team at the national baseball championships.
With that under her belt, Maddison travelled to Bendigo at the weekend to trial for the Australian baseball squad — the youngest player to give it a shot.
Mum Fiona said she was determined to pursue her goals.
A love of baseball runs through the family with her father and two siblings also heavily involved in the sport.
“Through winter all four of them play for the same team,” Ms Heath said.
Maddison hopes to play professionally in the future.
“There’s not as strong a pathway for women as men, but if she’s given an opportunity she would,” Ms Heath said. “She’s always willing to learn … to put in the extra training.”
Maddison has been nominated for a Local Sports Star award in the Junior Sports Star category.
