The redevelopment of Phillips Park in Lurnea will go ahead despite residents’ concerns that existing tennis courts at the site will be removed.
A detailed design based on a draft landscape masterplan report will be drawn up after Liverpool councillors voted to forge ahead with the project.
The proposed redevelopment of Phillips Park would include a multipurpose facility for community use, a flexible sports or play area, a turfed field and amenities aimed at providing a mix of passive and active recreational opportunities.
In April, Liverpool Council’s chief executive Kiersten Fishburn said the draft master plan also proposed an informal games area, featuring a half-sized basketball court and a playground, where tennis courts are currently located.
The four-court complex is used by Jim’s Easy Tennis School, which caters for children, adults and pensioners.
The council is investigating alternative locations for the courts.
A council report stated a number of users had opposed their relocation during the community consultation phase in March.
“Council recognises and acknowledges the legitimate concerns amongst community members about the relocation of the tennis courts, especially amongst those who regularly use and have used the tennis courts over many years,” the report said.
“However, retaining a viable and contemporary tennis facility within the park (with a minimum of four courts, as also endorsed by the current coach) prevent the practical realisation of the other elements required to achieve a contemporary community hub.”
A report on the tennis needs for Lurnea and surrounding areas will be brought to the August council meeting.
It will include a list of proposed alternative sites and associated time frames and costs.
