At just the age of 10, Prestons’ Hugh De La Torre-Greene has already earned a black belt.
Training six days a week, it’s no wonder the martial arts prodigy has achieved this feat at such a young age.
Hugh trains with the Australian taekwondo Group, a martial arts school based in Prestons, and also practises at home with his father and uncle.
He also takes adult black belt classes and advanced sports tournament classes each week.
Hugh began learning martial arts after being bullied at school until he was in Year 2.
“I got bullied a lot. I didn’t like it,” he said.
Taking to it “quite naturally”, Hugh said he enjoyed taekwondo because “you can learn new techniques and develop confidence.”
His dream is to become a master in the future.
His father Paul De La Torre-Greene said he had shown extraordinary commitment and dedication.
He said Hugh was also a role model for other children after becoming a junior instructor.
Hugh teaches students aged between three and 12, and helps with instructions.
He is this week’s Local Sports Star nominee in the Junior Sports Star Individual category.
