GEORGIA Portelli travels more than 450km a week to train.
The dedication from the Cecil Hills High 13-year-old has paid off. She won gold in javelin in the Australian Little Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park last week.
She’s no stranger to Australian competitions, snagging fourth in the under-13 national school competition for the same event last year.
The Kemps Creek teen said she picked up a javelin and threw 28m on her first attempt.
After 12 months of training in Cronulla she has fine tuned her technique further and is regularly throwing 40m.
Her personal best throw is 43.10m.
She said winning gold at the Australian Little Athletics Championships was great.
“We had a lot of camps and training ahead of it,” she said. “By the end of it, I’d made so many good friends.
“I’d love to go to the Olympics one day,” she said.
“My coach said he can already see me competing at the Commonwealth Games in the next few years if I keep going.”
Her training consists of two-hour sessions, four times a week. She does lots of work with a javelin in her hand but said she spends equal amounts of time on sprinting drills.
She said she was grateful for her family’s support.
“They push me to pursue my dreams,” she said.
