Local Sports Star nominee Tanvir sets the pace with help from West Indian star Corey Collymore

TANVIR Singh is one of the quickest and most successful bowlers in the Blacktown district and he has former West Indian Test paceman Corey Collymore to thank.

The strapping 15-year-old from Acacia Gardens can bowl at 110km/hour at club level, which has seen him collected 56 scalps in the 2016/17 season.

This week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star Award has shown a massive improvement from the previous season where he took 27 wickets, with the intensive coaching under Collymore doing the trick.

The 175cm tall Tanvir is also into coaching, being the assistant to Gordon Miller at the Hills sports High at Seven Hills, and helps train the 10-15 year-olds after school.

“I have to thank Corey for my success during the season because he helped me mentally and with my technique,” said Tanvir, who is a tidy bastman, scoring 349 runs last season.

“My sister Parneet and I trained with Corey for 10 weeks and he was the most relaxed coach.

“He taught us about the slower balls and putting more variety, taking me from being an average bowler to a much better fast bowler.”

Tanvir is also a handy middle order batsman.

He plays for several teams and competitions, including the Blacktown (Green Shield), Kellyville Ridge CC, Sydney Tigers, Glenwood High School and also toured India and the United Arab Emirates with the Sydney Warriors Academy team.

“My best efforts last season was 6-22 against Glenwood Redbacks while during the rep games, it was 4-14 against Mitchell in the championships in Orange,” Tanvir said.

Tanvir, who plays winter cricket for Sydney Tigers, is dedicated to the sport, and won the cricket award presented by Sydney West School Sport Association/

Tanvir’s favourite cricketer is Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav, with whom his bowling actions has been compared with.

“My current goal is to be chosen for the NSW under-17 squad and then hopefully for the NSW shield team and Australia,” Tanvir said.
