RISING golfer Harrison Sanchez is counting on his intensive six-month coaching to stay ahead of the pack at the ClubsNSW Academy of Sport Games at the Central Coast from April 7-9.

The 16-year-old William Clarke College student has improved beyond belief after his North Rocks-based Muirfield Golf Club took him under their wing and provided him the opportunities to fine tune his game.

Harrison — this week’s Local Sports Star nominee — has also overcome a slump last year, thanks to his own hard work and also being a part of the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) golf program since October 2016.

“Muirfield Golf Club paid for me to join the WSAS program which has helped my game phenomenally,” Harrison said.

“I enjoy the different challenges of golf, which is not as easy as some people think.

“I have been playing golf for more than eight years and used to accompany by my dad when he used to go to the driving range.

“I started showing interest and now my younger brother Nic is also picking up the sport with me.

“Last year I was in a slump but worked myself away from it and am now working on my swing technique to make me more accurate.

“I used to play basketball but stopped it a couple of years ago as I needed more time with my golf.

“I am also working around my studies and other school stuff to train harder with my golf.”

In breakthrough year in 2015, Harrison won eight awards at Muirfield Golf Club presentation night and has not looked back since, overcoming the slump last year to improve his handicap.

Harrison is playing off a 7.8 handicap and his goal is to make it four by the end of the year.

As part of the program with the Penrith-based WSAS, Harrison trains at the Twin Creeks golf course and would love nothing better than to be able to pursue his golfing career.

“I got a more things to do but my dream is to become a professional golfer,” Harrison said.
