Just making the Junior Motocross World Championships was never going to be enough for Ky Woods.
After a breakout 2018 saw the 12-year-old from Greystanes take out the MX National Championships, Ky has eclipsed some of the world’s very best riders to claim a silver medal at the junior world champs in Pietramurata, Italy.
After finishing first in qualifying on day one of the competition, Ky overcame mechanical issues to cross the line third and secure second overall.
“(Representing) the Australian team was awesome,” Ky said.
“I had trained hard the last year to prove to the selectors that I was the one that could take on the best in the world. We went over there believing we could be in the top five but when I qualified as the fastest heading into the finals I was pumped.
“I won the first final but in the second final I overheated my back brakes and lost the rear brake all together. I couldn’t ride my fastest and finished third which gave me second overall.”
Although thrilled with his result, Ky has already turned his attention to the Australian Titles in September.
“Going to the Australian Titles won’t be easy,” he said.
“Australia has a lot of great riders so I will have to give it my best again and I will be going for the win.”
Ky is a Parramatta Advertiser Junior Sports Star nominee for the 2019 Local Sports Stars competition.
The awards recognise and reward talented athletes across a wide range of sports, as well as the hardworking volunteers who keep associations running each weekend.
