Conquering a state football tournament undefeated is impressive.
A team doing so with next to no prior experience playing with each other is something else entirely.
That was the case for the North West Sydney Koalas U12s earlier this year when the girls dominated their competition to claim the prestigious Proctor Cup.
The Proctor Park Challenge is an annual pre-season tournament that brings together junior teams from all over NSW to compete against each other in a round-robin style competition.
Although the Koalas had never played formally together as a team before, you wouldn’t know it looking at their results.
The girls were a level above each of their opponents, scoring 26 goals and only conceding four over the course of the entire weekend.
The team’s manager Erica Matters said the championship was well deserved.
“It was a real team effort.
“The team definitely improved over the course of the tournament and with a fair bit of spare time between games and a team dinner on the Saturday night, they became closer socially, which was also reflected in their team play.
“The coach Kevin Johnson was bursting with pride at the medal presentation on the Sunday evening and all of the parents were also very proud of the girls.”
The NSW Koalas U12s have has been nominated for NewsLocal’s Junior Sports Star Team award.
