DENISE Kegg is for all proposes a fulltime volunteer, giving up her time to ensure that everything goes swimmingly well at three different projects she loves.
This week’s nominee for the Local Sports Star’s Service to Sports Award epitomises what many in our community do selflessly throughout the year.
However, Kegg won’t have it any other way, saying that the smiles on the children are the only reward she really wants.
The Quakers Hill resident has been volunteering with the Riverstone Dolphins Swimming Club for nearly a decade, starting as the timekeeper before taking over as secretary.
Kegg is a valuable part of the team which has placed the Dolphins on top of the NSW RSL swimming championships each year.
The mother-of-two is also vice-president, coach and volunteer at Quakers Hill Netball Club and was the former president of the Barnier Public School P & C.
“Yes, volunteering is really a fulltime job when you have to work around the three places I volunteer at,” Kegg said.
“But it’s all worth it when you see the smiles on the kids’ faces.
“I do enjoy coaching two teams at Quakers Hill Netball Club.
“Seeing the kids enjoying sports and getting on with other kids is what it is all about.
“This year, for the first time I am coaching my daughter Stephanie’s team but it is not as hard as I thought it will be as I think she is a natural-born leader.”
Kegg is a qualified state-level time keeper for swimming and has a strong background in sport, having excelled in netball, water polo and cricket at representative and zone levels.
“Volunteering is needed as clubs cannot manage without volunteers,” she said.
“It takes only about an hour to help and it does take a bit of the load off everyone.”
