ACROSS Australia mums, dads, grandmothers and grandfathers keep our sporting clubs going.
Sherri Longbottom is one of these unsung heroes.
She is the latest nominee in the Service to Sport category for the Local Sports Stars awards.
The 58-year-old from Botany first got involved with La Perouse United Rugby League Football Club in the early 1990s when her husband played and hasn’t looked back, working hard as club secretary.
“There is always lots to do but I enjoy it, it’s a great club,” Longbottom said.
She’s also a regular at games and can often be found cheering on her grandson, Robert Stanley, 8.
Club vice-president Leanne Marsh, who nominated her, described Sherri as the backbone of the club.
“We have a number of Aboriginal players and she always champions them in everything she does. She puts her heart and soul into this club and goes above and beyond.”
Longbottom also won the Pauline McLeod Award for Reconciliation, run by the Eastern Region Local Government Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Forum.
There are four other Local Sports Stars categories — Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual and Young Sporting Spirit Team.
