With her dedication and leadership skills, it is no wonder Emily Paull has made her mark in softball despite picking up the sport just four years ago.
The Muirfield High School student played in the U17 Female State Championships on the weekend for the Cumberland Nepean Softball Association, finishing in fourth place after losing by a point in a gruelling two-hour match against the eventual state champions Manly Warringah.
In January the 15-year-old captained the U15 Metro Green team at the Softball Australia girls regional championships, leading them to a grand final win in Perth.
“There was a little bit of pressure but it was really good because I already knew all the girls I was playing with,” she said.
It was her second victory following her U15 Metro Orange grand final triumph at the 2016 championships.
The Northmead teen was selected to the Western Sydney Academy of Sport’s softball squad this year, and trains three or four times per week.
Emily, who has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star award, said she enjoyed the teamwork of softball and said a successful athlete needed to be a “team player”.
“You can’t win the game by yourself … you have to have the right attitude,” she said.
After playing at club and representative level, she hopes to play for the state soon.
“Towards the end of this year I get to try out for the U17 NSW state team and I’d really love to be on that team,” she said.
Nominations are now open for the Local Sports Stars program.
