THE Hills Bulls under-10s girls made an impressive comeback at this year’s NSW Oztag State Cup, securing a win after the heartache of falling one game short in 2016.

Coach Simon Gwynne said the team, which have been nominated for the Young Sporting Spirit Team award, were a “great bunch of kids”.

“We went very close last year, and fell one game short,” he said.

“So this year we came back with a purpose to get the job done, which we did and I am so proud of all of them.”

The U10s formed part of a successful hat-trick for the Bulls girls, with their U9s and U12s girls teams also emerging as champions from the State Cup at Coffs Harbour in February.

The U10s showed strong defence in the tournament, with only three tries scored against them in nine games.

They secured a 3-1 victory in the semi-finals against Central Coast, setting themselves up for a title decider against Souths.

The final was a close affair with the scores tied 1-1 for most of the match before the Bulls reached deep into their reserves to score the decider.

“Their defence was outstanding and it’s a credit to all of them,” Gwynne said.

“The conditions were extremely hot and no one complained, they just got on with the job.

“A big thank you to the parents for their commitment, my assistant coach Matt Kelly for all his hard work and efforts, and to our team manager Alison Gwynne for all her organisation.”

Nominations are open for the Local Sports Star competition in the categories of Junior Sports Star (Individual or Team), Young Sporting Spirit (Individual or Team), and Service to Sport.
