Castle Hill RSL Gymnastics’ elite level girls squad has starred for NSW at the 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships, bringing home five medals from the prestigious competition.
The team of Sophie Finegan (14), Eva Fountis (12), Sienna Melrose (12), Evie Borg (11), Skye Melrose (10) and Yun Ni Wong (11) all travelled to Melbourne for last month’s nationals where they represented their state against more than 1000 of Australia’s top gymnasts.
Each of the girls performed strongly in their events with Eva, Sophie and Sienna all earning podium finishes.
Sophie and Eva both earned team silver medals while Eva also earned bronze on vault.
Sienna was the best ranking NSW gymnast on day one of the competition and carried that momentum to a team bronze and vault bronze in the Level 9-under division.
Castle Hill RSL gymnastics manager Vanessa Whelan said the girls’ results were a testament to how hard they worked in the lead-up to the competition.
“The squad of six girls trains in excess of 22 hours per week,” Ms Whelan said.
“Eva and Sienna will now attend the Team Future advanced camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra next month for four days with 20 of Australias top future gymnasts by invitation from Gymnastics Australia, along with their coach Zoltan Mirko.”
Castle Hill RSL Gymnastics’ elite level girls squad is a Rouse Hill Times nominee for the 2019 Local Sports Stars competition.
