Supermarket giant Woolworths has revealed plans for a new shopping centre in one of the fastest growing suburbs in Sydney’s southwest.

The project is earmarked for 260 Eighth Ave – land owned by Woolworths – and will include a Woolworths supermarket alongside a range of specialty retailers and service providers.

A letter delivered to Austral residents reveals Woolworths was planning to lodge plans with Liverpool Council for the new shopping centre with detailed plans expected to be on public exhibition in coming months.

If approved, the new centre will have a 300 space carpark, designed to facilitate convenient online shopping, with a drive through “Direct to Boot” facility for the supermarket.

It is understood three buildings would be demolished to make way for the shopping centre, if approved.

The supermarket giant told residents it was “committed to working collaboratively with council and the local community to bring great convenience and choice to the Austral area”.

A Woolworths spokesman said the retail giant was excited to deliver a high quality retail development at Austral.

“We believe our plans will contribute positively to Austral, creating hundreds of new jobs and providing a wider range of fresh produce, grocery and household items for the community,” the spokesman said.

“We’re working very closely with Liverpool Council and look forward to receiving feedback on our proposal from local residents over the coming months.”

A photo of the letter on the Austral & Leppington Community Group on Facebook sparked more than 120 comments, with many praising the news.

One person wrote a Cole “would have been better so there’s a bit more competition” and referenced three Woolworths supermarkets in proximity.

“Three Woolies within 10km is a bit of overkill,” the same person commented.

Another said while the new developing was “exciting”, roadworks remained a concern,

“All those fancy brochures said shops, town centres and infrastructure but all we got were heavily conjested (sic) areas of traffic,” another replied.

“Need all the roads upgraded and traffic lights at intersections,” another commented.
