LIVERPOOL has anchored its position as the gateway to the new Western Sydney Airport with the official opening of the headquarters for WSA Co — the organisation that will deliver and run the airport.
Federal Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher and Senator for Western Sydney Marise Payne met with WSA Co staff on Monday and toured the company’s new offices on Scott St.
They were joined by Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller, Deputy Mayor Tina Ayyad and Liverpool Council chief executive Kiersten Fishburn.
Cr Waller said the opening and initial tendering for work at the Badgerys Creek site removed any doubt about whether the $5.3 billion airport would ever be built. “This moment has been a long time coming and I say this as a person with a personal history that is entwined with this magnificent city,” she said.
“We have witnessed its rise from the fringes of Sydney to where we are now — standing at the centre of Sydney’s growth region and with a new airport being built to connect us with the world.”
Cr Waller said there were bright prospects for Liverpool residents. “We are looking forward to having more workers in the city centre, more residents living close to the train station and more activity though the day and into the evening,” she said.
Mr Fletcher said that at its peak the company was expected to employ 200 people and Liverpool residents “will be well placed to apply for those jobs”.
