A beloved 18-year-old was left brain dead and later died after what police allege was a violent unprovoked attack in Sydney’s southwest by two brothers.

George Woods, 18, died in hospital a little over a week after he was stabbed at Woodward Cres, Miller just after 9pm on October 1.

Police officers found Mr Woods with serious wounds to his neck and performed CPR before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition but tragically he later died.

A short time later, a 19-year-old man presented to Liverpool Hospital, suffering stab wounds to his back.

Following inquiries, strike force investigators arrested Peter Dates, 20, during a vehicle stop on Valley Rd, Campbelltown, on Tuesday morning. He was later charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detectives also arrested 18-year-old man Wesley Dates, at a unit complex in Church St North Parramatta on Tuesday morning. He was taken to Merrylands police station where he was charged with murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

His older brother Peter made an unsuccessful application for bail on Wednesday, with the court hearing “a significant degree of violence” unfolded outside a block of units at Miller.

The police prosecutor said it was a “strong” case as the facts before the court allege a “violent ongoing assault” by the brothers resulted in a teenage victim sustaining severe injuries to his head and facial region.

The court heard Mr Woods was on the ground for the majority of the attack.

The prosecutor said the attacks appeared to have been unprovoked, with an argument leading to the initial attack, and said no bail conditions could mitigate the risk of further violence.

Peter Dates’ lawyer said the police facts “do not reflect my client inflicting a wound at any stage”.

He said the incident was “unfortunate” and made his client realise the effects of illicit substances and alcohol.

He suggested the bail conditions of his client including not entering the suburb of Miller, a nightly curfew and for Peter remain abstinent from drugs and alcohol while on bail.

Magistrate Andrew Miller noted Peter was not charged in relation to the death of Mr Woods but for his actions to a second man, Joshua Ratu, on the night of October 1.

The court heard Wesley Dates allegedly stabbed one of the men with a 30cm knife in the neck and the other man in the shoulder.

The Dates brothers allegedly kicked the pair while they laid on the ground and then fled the scene.

“Mr Woods was taken to hospital but ultimately declared brain dead,” Mr Miller said.

The other man received stitches and was discharged from Liverpool Hospital.

Both Dates brothers remain in custody with the matter adjourned to Campbelltown Local Court on December 6.
