A fresh new look could be coming to the semirural suburb of Austral, in Sydney’s southwest, under plans targeting first-home buyers.

Sydney-based group Vcross Development Management Pty Ltd is proposing to build terraces and apartment units at 250-260 Sixth Ave, Austral — a site that, according to planning documents, has primarily been used for agricultural activities over the past 50 years.

The group’s director Ryan Ma said an initial proposal for 34 townhouses and 187 apartment units had been amended to reduce the proposed density.

However, he would not comment on how many units and terraces the multimillion-dollar project would include, saying the details were yet to be finalised.

He said the figures would be released in the coming weeks.

Mr Ma said the project aimed to provide options for first-home buyers looking to settle in Austral, located within the South West Priority Growth Area.

The suburb was “very close to the future major infrastructure” with the Western Sydney Airport and Aerotropolis being built in nearby Badgerys Creek and had access to Leppington railway station, he said.

Mr Ma said the plans would introduce a “landscaped” feeling to the area, offering the community “something they have never seen before”.

Planning documents state the proposal is in the public interest because it is located on land that has been zoned for development purposes and expands housing choice in Sydney’s southwest.

“The proposal has been designed in accordance with the Austral and Leppington North ILP (indicative layout plan) and Precinct Vision to deliver a walkable neighbourhood, providing for a range of residential densities and lot types with high amenity for future residents,” it reads.

The application will be determined by the Sydney Western City Planning Panel.
