A Hurstville student sent a young Jewish person terrifying Snapchat voice recordings while another person could be heard mentioning Hitler and promoting the death of Jews.

Suvir Mahesh Salvi faced Waverley Local Court on Wednesday for sentence after previously pleading guilty to using a carriage service to offend.

The 22-year-old sent the young person two disturbing voice recordings on August 12 last year. In the first recording, Salvi said: “Bossman, I want to say something to you. Free Palestine man, what the hell man. It’s not cool, yeah.”

Another voice could be heard in the second recording saying: “Gas the Jews ya faggot” and “Hail Hitler,” before chanting “Free Palestine,” police facts state.

Court documents state the victim knew Salvi who worked as a supervisor at Hyper Karting, Moore Park, where the young person and his father had raced.

The young person feared for his safety after receiving the messages as Salvi had access to his personal details from his Hyper Karting customer profile. He was initially “too scared to tell his parents”, documents state.

When the young person’s father found out, he confronted Salvi on the phone. The offender denied sending the voice recordings and swiftly unfriended the victim on Snapchat.

Salvi then texted the victim’s number under the guise of “checking” if it was correct and said he had not contacted him yet to try to cover his tracks.

He told police he sent the voice recordings after seeing the young person had an Israeli flag on his profile.

Court documents state that police concluded his actions were “hate crime motivated”.

Salvi told officers he did not know what was said in the voice recordings and he had been out drinking with friends. He refused to tell police who the other voice on the recording belonged to.

Salvi moved to Australia from India three years ago to study community services and had sought a visa extension.

Salvi represented himself in court and apologised to Magistrate George Zdenkowski for the comments he made.

“I am trying to better myself,” he added.

Mr Zdenkowski said Salvi’s behaviour was “foolish” and “stupid”.

“The motivation was hatred, it may not have been in your heart for this particular occasion,” he said.

The court heard a sentence assessment report showed Salvi had no criminal record, an alcohol problem and had some insight into the impacts of his actions. He was convicted and fined $500.
