Carlos Higa is central to every football game he plays.
The 13-year-old centre-midfielder from Wattle Grove is known for being the heart of the team, helping players co-ordinate with one another in pursuit of victory.
But the rapport between Carlos and his team mates means communication is often intuitive — a testament to the vital role the youngster plays as the team’s linchpin.
“It’s being able to know, not really telepathically, but you know what your team mates are doing. We already know where we have to be if someone’s in a particular position,” Carlos said.
His love for football was influenced by his family; Carlos’ dad played in local competitions, while his grandfather made it to the national football stage in Peru.
“It runs through the family. Everyone likes soccer in the family,” he said.
The rising star loves playing to win and enjoys the competitive nature of the game: “it’s playing with my friends. I guess the thought to win. It’s always nice to win, to impress,” he said.
He would like to play football professionally if given the opportunity and looks up to Barcelona as a team.
Carlos spends two hours a day training by himself and sometimes even up to four hours when training with his team from Moorebank Sports Soccer Club.
He’s currently working on his shooting skills.
Carlos has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star award, sponsored by Rebel.
