Train services will increase by up to 92 per cent in southwest Sydney, with Leppington and Edmondson Park stations to get a massive boost.

More than 1500 extra weekly services will be introduced across the Sydney Trains network from November as part of the NSW Government’s More Trains, More Services program.

The draft train timetable represents the largest increase in capacity introduced to the network at one time, with growing suburbs getting the most benefits.

“By reconfiguring the T5 Cumberland and T2 Leppington Lines, we are delivering a massive 92 per cent increase in the number of trains stopping at Leppington and Edmondson Park stations each week,” Holsworthy state Liberal MP Melanie Gibbons said.

A fast service will also be introduced between Liverpool and the Sydney CBD on the T3 Bankstown line.

“We have already experienced record growth on our network in recent years, and we know that train trips to and from these important parts of Sydney are set to grow further.

“It is vital we cater for this growth by providing services that better connect customers between northwest Sydney, southwestern Sydney, western Sydney and the Sydney CBD,” Ms Gibbons said.

The final train timetable will be released in October and takes effect in late November.

Meantime, there are fresh calls for a north-south rail line to cater for projected growth in western Sydney.

Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils president Stephen Bali said a rail line in the north-south corridor would improve access to education and employment.

“Greater western Sydney is set to absorb two-thirds of Sydney’s population growth by 2036, half of which will occur in the north-south corridor between Hawkesbury and Campbelltown,” Cr Bali said.

“If the NSW Government continues down its current course of intensive residential development without appropriate public transport they will be creating transport dead zones.

“Currently, only 23 per cent of western Sydney residents live within walking distance of a rail station. By focusing on this particular corridor, we could ensure that half of the west’s growth has public transport access — completely transforming the way the region operates.”
