The large, diverse region left of the Sydney CBD is under the Federal and State Governments’ spotlight as a growth hub, with a burgeoning population and a new airport on its horizon.

But how do we know what defines western Sydney?

According to social news site Reddit, you are in western Sydney if you are west of the Red Rooster Line.

The chicken restaurant chain’s easternmost Sydney location is at Sydney Airport, with Windsor at the northwest tip, Campbelltown in the southwest, and Emu Plains at the westernmost point.

If you live to the left of the line snaking through Rouse Hill, Blacktown, Parramatta, Lakemba and Padstow, you are a resident of western Sydney.

“This just reaffirms my theory that anything past Concord Rd is western Sydney,” Reddit user mcwilliamb said.

“Most legitimate definition of western Sydney that I’ve ever seen,” user –kate–b added.

However, the Greater Sydney Commission has a more formal definition. GSC chief Lucy Turnbull recently redefined Parramatta and the Sydney Olympic Park region as Sydney’s central region.

Instead, Badgerys Creek and the planned Western Sydney Airport is to become the heart of Sydney’s new Western City, connecting to the “string of pearls” – Camden, Campbelltown, Liverpool and Penrith.
