The much-anticipated opening of Ed.Square will be postponed amid the coronavirus outbreak, with the new town centre set to be launched next year instead.
Frasers Property Australia, the developer behind the project in Edmondson Park, said it had made the “difficult but necessary decision” to defer the opening due to the effects of COVID-19.
A new launch date has not been confirmed, but the developer said it anticipated the town centre would open in 2021.
Ed.Square is being developed next to Edmondson Park railway station and promises an inner-city lifestyle in Sydney’s southwest, with a mix of housing, shops, services and open space within walking distance of homes.
The first stage of the project was set to launch later this year and feature a fresh food marketplace, medical facilities, a range of dining options, Event Cinemas and more.
However, the developer confirmed Coles will proceed with its opening in September.
“This is great news for future residents, as you will be able to access the essential items you need as we work through these challenging, complex times together,” it posted on Facebook.
“At Frasers Property Australia, we are responsible for creating an environment where people can gather, relax and socialise - an environment where the businesses at Ed.Square Town Centre have the best chance of success.
“Please be assured there’s still much excitement among the team here at Ed,” it continued.
“Some great retailers have been secured, the construction team is hitting all its major milestones, and we are fully committed to making the opening of Ed’s Town Centre a grand celebration befitting its place as the heart of the new Ed.Square community.”
