M5 motorists who use the congested Moorebank Ave and Hume Highway intersection are in for some relief with the federal and state government’s allocating $175 million funding for a project to upgrade the site.
Transport and Roads Minister Andrew Constance said the $175 million had been allocated to the project on a 50:50 funding split from the Australian and NSW governments to get on with the upgrade.
“The M5 is a key route between the city and Sydney’s southwestern suburbs that becomes
congested between Moorebank Ave and the Hume High during the afternoon peak,” Mr Constance said.
“This congestion is caused by traffic trying to enter and exit the motorway westbound along
a short section of the motorway.’’
Transport for NSW will build a westbound exit and underpass below Moorebank Ave for traffic leaving the M5 Motorway at the Hume Hwy, as well as a two-lane bridge across the Georges River, Powerhouse Rd railway lines and Lakewood Cres.
“By addressing this key pinch point, westbound drivers will experience smoother and safer
journeys on this section of the M5 and Moorebank Ave,’’ Mr Constance said.
“The funding allocated in this year’s Budget will allow us to progress plans for essential
enabling work over the next 12 months.”
Holsworthy state Liberal MP Melanie Gibbons said work on the upgrade had already started,
with the NSW Government acting now to address the predicted growth in the area.
“We have already started investigation work to assist with planning the upgrade after the
contract for the concept design and review of environmental factors was awarded last
year,” Ms Gibbons said.
“It is important we get on with this work now, to keep our locals moving.”
The review of environmental factors for the upgrade will be on display for public comment
this year.
