Man accused of phishing scam slapped with fresh charge

Police allegedly uncovered a treasure trove of electronics in the southwest Sydney home of a man accused of sending more than 17 million fraudulent text messages – claiming to be from companies including Australia Post – through an elaborate phishing scam.

Xuan Su, 39, was hit with an additional charge following his arrest by Strike Force Kanbi detectives, after police seized multiple SIM cards and electronics at a Moorebank home on December 12.

During the search, officers found two active SIM-boxes, SIM cards and electronics which they alleged were consistent with running a fraudulent text message scam.

The items were seized to undergo further forensic examination.

Su, who appeared at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday with his wife and daughter gathered outside the courthouse, was initially charged with using equipment connected to the network to commit a serious offence.

According to court documents, Su dealt Australian drivers licences, passports and personal identification information with the intention of committing fraud between September 2022 and December 2023.

He also connected equipment to a telecommunication network, including mobile devices with associated subscriber identity module cards in December last year.

Police will allege in court the man was responsible for sending over 17 million scam messages pertaining to be from companies such Australia Post and Linkt.

Strike Force Kanbi was established by State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad to investigate the use of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) boxes – an electronic device used to send bulk text messages across the Australian telecommunications network containing fraudulent links.

The text messages usually appear to be sent from a legitimate institution containing a fraudulent link, directing the victim to an illegitimate website for the purpose of financial gain.

Su’s lawyer, David Downey, told the court a second charge had been laid on his client and initially requested for a two week adjournment to enter pleas.

The police prosecutor said the DPP would take carriage of the case and requested an eight week adjournment.

The registrar granted the adjournment for briefs to be served on April 10 at Campbelltown Local Court.

When addressed by the media outside, Su’s lawyer did not wish to provide a comment and said he’d need to speak with his client for further instructions. Su did not comment.

Su’s wife and toddler, who Su held in his arms to shield himself from the media, left the courthouse in silence before requesting the media to stop filming.
