Miller: Man charged after woman allegedly robbed at knifepoint at Woolworths

A man who allegedly threatened a female Woolworths employee at knifepoint in Sydney’s southwest and robbed a service station has been charged. Find out what happened when he fronted court.

The man accused of a string of daylight robberies, including one in which a worker was allegedly threatened at knifepoint at a southwest Sydney supermarket had been “seeing people and hearing voices”, a court has heard.

Mark Devries, 29, was arrested on Friday after he was found riding a pushbike around 8.20am on Thursday in the Miller area.

Police allege he was responsible for a robbery of a Metro service station on Castlereagh St in Liverpool on May 30, and a robbery of a Woolworths supermarket on Cartwright Ave, Miller on May 31.

Officers were told a man had allegedly threatened a female Woolworths employee with a knife at 7:30am and demanded money, before stealing $770 cash and leaving on a pushbike.

The employee was not injured.

Devries was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon, robbery and goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen.

His legal aid representative requested a mental health assessment for her client who has been unwell at Liverpool Local Court on Friday.

The court heard Devries is “seeing people and hearing voices telling him to harm himself.”

Magistrate Julie Zaki granted Devries an urgent mental health assessment due to hallucinations.

Devries made no application for bail. The matter will be heard on July 14 at Campbelltown Local Court.
