The new-look Macquarie Mall will be open to the public by Christmas after the project was beset by delays.
Liverpool Council’s special projects manager Albert Galletta and Mayor Wendy Waller were joined by the Liverpool Leader on a tour of the shopping strip on Monday.
Stage 3 of the long-awaited upgrade was completed in August and is now open to the public. The remaining stages will be complete by Christmas.
The mall is being transformed into a hub featuring deciduous trees, a children’s playground, outdoor seating, table tennis tables, chess tables and a water play area.
It will be fully accessible to people with a disability and will also serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Construction began last September and the first stage was due to be completed by November 2015.
Liverpool Council took over construction when the original contractor was placed into liquidation.
