A crowd of thousands cheered Liverpool City’s netball teams to victory last weekend with three of the four divisions earning hard-fought podium finishes.
Two Liverpool City teams were named 2018 Netball NSW champions, including the 15/u and 13/u teams, while a champion finish was snatched from the 14/u team by Baulkham Hills Shire, deeming them runner-ups.
The 12-and-under team ranked sixth against 19 rivals in what was the first tournament they had competed in.
The three-day competition is said to have attracted thousands of people to Liverpool City, which hosted the division-one games to mark pariticpation in 50-years of netball competitions in NSW.
“It was magical,” said Estelle Lawler, secretary of the Liverpool City Netball Association. “Those kids worked so hard and trained for so long to get there and give it everything they had.”
Ms Lawler, who is incidentally Liverpool Leader’s Local Sports Star nominee this week, said all four teams were model champions.
“I think [the tournament] teaches the team sportsmanship,” she said. “They’re not just playing for themselves, they’re playing for one another.
“They get along so well with the other teams and the other associations. The Manly girls were dancing with our girls and the Penrith girls. That connection is there.”
The tournament is an annual event, but there’s little reprieve for the competition girls.
“It’s full steam ahead to the end of the competition,” said Ms Lawler. “We’re hoping to win the grand final.”
