MEREANA Peyroux enjoys the challenge of playing against older rivals, saying the experience is invaluable.
The 16-year-old Miller local is one of the most promising netballers in the state, representing the Mounties in Division I while playing for the NSW under 19 indoor team.
The Westfield Sports High School student is also with UTS Sparks in the under 20 Premier League competition.
Mereana is this week’s Local Sports Star nominee, having been introduced to netball when she was seven by her sports-loving parents.
Mereana , who is comfortable playing in any position on the court, is also a regular netball umpire and coach for the under 9s, saying they are the best ways to give something back to the game she loves.
“I’ve previously enjoyed swimming and Oztag during the off season but then I started playing indoor netball, so it’s netball year round,” Mereana said.
“Sport relies heavily on volunteers and coaching and umpiring are ways I can give back to my club.
“It’s awesome to see players master a skill or simply having fun and t’s nice to know that you’re contributing to the development of the individual and the game.
“Mounties netball is amazing — their encouragement and constant motivation has pushed me to heights I never thought possible.
“I am extremely thankful to them for their support, commitment and willingness to help me grow.
“Receiving the Mounties Junior Sports Person of the Year award is probably my highlight so far because I was honoured especially given the number of super talented nominees from other Mounties sub-clubs.”
Mereana’s ambition is play at an international level but for now is keen to maintain her progress and first get into the premier league. She also loves to play in a mixed team.
Next month is a very busy month for the focused and talented teenager.
“In May, I will be competing in the under 19 indoor netball championships, the NSW Combined Sports High School Championship and the State Champs,” Mereana said.
“Regarding training and playing in higher age groups, I think it works in my favour.
“I’m training with and competing against athletes that have more on and off court experience. “There’s loads I’m able to learn from them.”
The Mounties provide her with youth training, mentoring and financial support.
