Liverpool West Public School: student kid hit by car, safety improvements

A southwest Sydney primary school is set to have increased safety measures, including new pick up and drop off zones. It comes as an eight-year old child was hit by a car and taken to hospital.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

The chances of a primary school student being struck by a car outside a southwest Sydney primary school may soon be cut down, with plans for increased safety measures in the works.

It comes as an eight-year old child was struck by a car while crossing the road outside Liverpool West Public School on Wednesday.

Paramedics were called to the scene on Flowerdale Rd, Liverpool about 3.15pm on Wednesday and the child was transported The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with leg injuries. The child is now in a stable condition.

It’s not the first pedestrian accident on Flowerdale Rd, near the Hoxton Park Rd intersection, which has been previously identified as a traffic problem spot.
Liverpool councillor Nathan Hagarty said as part of the redevelopment of Liverpool West Public School, the School Infrastructure Department had proposed indented pick-up and drop-off zones, along with bus zones on the western side of Flowerdale Rd.

The proposal also included a signposted pick-up and drop-off zone along the southern side of Mainsbridge Ave, fronting the school.

“We’re looking at improving safety there,” Cr Hagarty said.

“The idea is to provide more parking around the school for parents.”

But what’s most important, Cr Hagarty said, was parents making sure their children use the designated crossing. The councillor said the recent collision not only affected the victim and their family, but the drivers involved and all those who watch it unfold.

“It’s just not worth saving a few seconds when it could easily end in tragedy,” Cr Hagarty said.

“All our local schools have speed limits and instructions in place for a safe school pick up and drop off – please follow them.”
Just around the corner, on Hoxton Park Rod, a young man tragically lost his life on the same day following a motorbike accident.
