Liverpool’s streets were filled with colour and joy on Saturday as more than 5000 people turned out for the annual Festival of Chariots.
Otherwise known as Ratha Yatra, the event is one of the oldest street parades in India and honours Lord Jagannath or the Lord of the Universe.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller was joined by councillors and dignitaries at a welcome ceremony, which was followed by a performance by dancers from Mayapur in India.
Thousands joined the parade through the city’s streets, with up to 180 people pulling the chariot at a time.
The event, in its 12th year, concluded with more cultural performances and a feast.
