Three new schools will be built in Liverpool while others will receive upgrades as part of a $6 billion announcement by the NSW Government.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian last week announced the money will be spent over the next four years to build or upgrade 170 schools as part of Tuesday’s Budget.
The state’s student population is expected to reach 164,000 by 2031 due to a boom in enrolments.
The package includes a new high school and primary school at Edmondson Park and upgrades at Liverpool Boys, Liverpool Girls and Cecil Hills high schools.
A third school will also be built, although its type and location are not yet known.
“We are in the midst of a school building program NSW has never before experienced and this year’s budget takes this to a whole new level,” Ms Berejiklian said.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller welcomed the news and said all eyes would be on the timing of the delivery as the city’s population surges.
“The pressure is on in Liverpool because it will be leading the way in Sydney’s growth over the next 20 years,” Cr Waller said.
“Council and residents have been pressing the government to ensure delivery of critical infrastructure, such as schools, is synchronised with that growth. It hasn’t always been happening.
“Now the focus will shift to when the promised new and upgraded schools will be ready for Liverpool’s rapidly expanding student population.
“It is essential that quality education is easily accessible to our growing community.”
With three universities now based in Liverpool, Cr Waller said they “must be complemented by quality primary and secondary education delivered by schools in our area.”
