Taste Food Tours are back in Liverpool highlighting cultural gems

Taste Food Tours are back in Liverpool and we’ve got a sneak peek at what foodies can expect this year.

Snow Velvet Cafe in Liverpool

Marky Duong and his family have brought the secrets of Vietnamese street food all the way from Saigon to southwest Sydney.

Mr Duong is the owner of Snow Velvet Cafe in Liverpool and says diners would be hard pressed to find street food as authentic as that served at the Moore St eatery.

For that he credits his parents, who learnt from the very best on the streets of Saigon before coming to Australia two years ago, bringing with them the secrets to delicious, fresh Vietnamese dishes.

That includes one of the cafe’s signature drinks: Vietnamese egg coffee, a preparation of whipped egg yolks, condensed milk and espresso coffee.

And it’s a drink diners in the know have searched high and low for across Sydney.

“Egg coffee has been established in Hanoi since a very long time. It’s become one of the most popular signature drinks from the north of Vietnam,” Mr Duong said.

The 28-year-old, who is also a stylist, believes the family business is the only eatery in Sydney that serves egg coffee.

“We whip it with sugar to make it like a cream and then it’s served on top of the condensed milk and with a very strong Vietnamese espresso coffee.”

Mr Duong said any hesitation over the iconic drink dissipated once customers had a taste.

“At first they’re scared to try because when you see egg on top of coffee it sounds really strange, but when they actually taste it they really love it,” he said.

“They say that it actually tastes like dessert. It’s not raw egg at all. When you whip it, it becomes like a cream.”

Mr Duong said popular menu items included the Vietnamese iced coffee and beef noodle soup.

Snow Velvet Cafe is one of nine Liverpool businesses taking part in Taste Cultural Food Tours’ latest tours.

Taste of the World Liverpool tours will run every fortnight, starting from June 23.

Lead tour guide Latife Dogan said participants will be taken around the globe to sample food from different cultures including India and the Middle East.

“We will take them on a journey tasting around the world. They don’t need a passport,” Ms Dogan said.

“And for three hours what will happen is total strangers come together … we’ll spend three hours learning about the food and the cultures.”

Taste Cultural Food Tours Inc. is a social enterprise charity established to create a culturally connected Australia.
