A 28ha site in the heart of Liverpool is set to be transformed into a premium lifestyle precinct for southwest Sydney’s booming population.
Sport and recreation facilities and mixed-use development form part of the vision for Woodward Park, located at the corner of Hoxton Park Rd and the Hume Hwy.
The precinct, to be known as Woodward Place, will also include open space.
Liverpool Council chief executive Kiersten Fishburn said it was “the next transformational project aimed at cementing Liverpool as Sydney’s third CBD”.
She said 23 firms had expressed interest in producing a master plan for the park and a shortlist of eight will soon be released.
“The winning designer will be announced in May and will produce a 20 to 30-year master plan to transform Woodward Park into Woodward Place as Liverpool grows,” she said.
“Council’s overarching vision is for Woodward Place to become a regional destination in the heart of Liverpool, with open space, sport and recreation facilities and high-quality mixed use development.”
Ms Fishburn said the precinct will be a “playground” for the city’s growing population — which is expected to double to 30,000 — as well as the increasing number of students studying at three major university campuses in the city centre.
The site is currently home to the Whitlam Leisure Centre, netball courts, football fields and a range of community facilities.
Ms Fishburn said the council will ensure the plans “take into account the wonderful contributions that local organisations make to our community”.
“Council is in discussions with organisations that use Woodward Park and will expand these discussions throughout the process.”
A preliminary concept design for Woodward Place is expected by the end of the year.
Last week, the Leader reported on a proposal for a 13-storey commercial tower and 22-storey hotel at 431 Macquarie St, Liverpool, opposite Woodward Park.
