An 18-year-old learner motorbike rider has narrowly avoided jail after he was clocked speeding 140km/h with no headlights or number plates, before riding on footpaths and crashing during a police chase in Sydney’s southwest.

The teen appeared at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday when he pleaded guilty to driving dangerously in a police pursuit just before midnight at Prestons on June 11.

Documents tendered in court state police caught the L-plater, who was 17 at the time so cannot be identified, was speeding while heading west along Camden Valley Way and did a U-turn to follow him before activating their lights and sirens to signal for him to pull over.

Documents state the learner rider ignored the instruction and instead sped up, clocking in at over 140km/h before he took a sharp left turn onto Gellibrand Rd, Edmondson Park.

Police including Strike Force Raptor officers continued to pursue him through backstreets where officers saw him driving on to the footpath on Hartlepool Rd in an attempt to evade them.

The L-plater’s luck eventually ran out as he attempted to turn right at the roundabout of Kingsbury and Gellibrand roads and spun out of control before crashing.

He fled the crash site on foot, but was nabbed by Raptor squad police shortly after.

In court on Wednesday, Magistrate Andrew Miller said the objective seriousness of the offence was high because of the “obvious planning” the teen put in to avoid police detection, and the risk he posed to the community with his reckless behaviour.

“No numberplate and blacked out headlights could only be for one reason – he was not intending to be seen and he didn’t intend to stop,” Mr Miller said.

The youth was sentenced to 18 months under house arrest pending a home detention assessment from Liverpool Community Corrections office.

Mr Miller emphasised this was his only chance to serve his sentence outside of prison, and if he committed any further offences he would “go straight to jail”.
