A glamorous woman who used counterfeit money to go on a spending spree in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has seen her fraud charge dismissed on mental health grounds.
A pregnant Kayla Attie, 23, fronted Downing Centre Local Court on Monday for sentence for one count of dishonestly obtain property by deception which she previously pleaded guilty to.
The charge related to her enjoying a couple of hours of retail therapy with two friends at Westfield Eastgardens on a Thursday night last August, spending hundreds of dollars including at popular retail stores FootLocker and EB Games.
Four of the $100 notes she used were counterfeit, court documents stated.
Police officers from Strike Force Raptor, which targets bikie gangs, raided her Casula home and charged her later that year.
In court on Monday, she was supported by her heavily-tattooed partner.
Attie’s lawyer requested her matter be dealt with under section 32 of the Mental Health Act.
Magistrate Susan McIntyre granted the application meaning Attie’s charge was dismissed.
As part of the decision, Attie has been diverted into the care of a health professional rather than dealt with in a criminal court.
The court heard Attie had a troubled upbringing and she suffered from serious mental health concerns.
