A $1.5 billion masterplanned community in Sydney’s southwest is set to welcome shoppers for the first time with the opening of Coles in the new town centre.

Ed.Square will officially open in 2021 and feature an Eat Street with eateries, a medical centre, cinemas, a dental facility, gym, chemist, 926 parking spaces and more.

The town centre was expected to open this year, but its launch was deferred due to the effects of COVID-19.

For now though, the opening of Coles has given the local economy a boost with the creation of 120 new jobs in Edmondson Park.

The supermarket has been designed with convenience in mind, with Coles research showing one in three customers did not have the time to cook from scratch and 52 per cent of respondents were not interested in cooking more at home.

A new Coles Kitchen convenience range will offer more than 100 ready-made meals, salads and snacks, as well as a pet food scoop and weigh station — the first of its kind in Sydney’s southwest.

Coles Edmondson Park store manager Timothy Daley said he was pleased to support local jobs.

“I know there has been a lot excitement around Ed.Square opening, so we’re proud to be the first store in the centre to open our doors and create 120 new jobs for the community,” he said.

“We really want to take a personal approach and get to know our customers so we become part of the community — I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the next 12 months and over the years to come.”

Other features include an in-store bakery, gourmet delicatessen with a large selection of local and international cheeses, a range of fresh seafood and an adjoining Liquorland store.
