A man and woman have been charged over the alleged theft of a statue of a military tracker dog in Sydney’s southwest.

A man and woman who allegedly stole a statue of a military tracker dog in Sydney’s southwest will face court later this month.

Police will allege the theft took place in the early hours of December 12, 2019 at Edmondson Park railway station, where the bronze statue of the dog — named Caesar — was unveiled three years earlier.

Caesar was celebrated as one of 11 local tracker dogs that saved the lives of their handlers during the Vietnam War.

Liverpool police began investigating the alleged theft and obtained CCTV footage of a silver car driving into the station carpark on Croatia Ave.

Police allege a man and woman were seen to park the car and return shortly afterwards.

After multiple attempts, police allege the man removed the statue and placed it into the boot of the car before driving away.

The pair is due to face Liverpool Local Court later this month.

A 39-year-old man and 51-year-old woman, both from Liverpool, were arrested and charged with stealing.

The pair was granted conditional bail and are due to appear at Liverpool Local Court on September 30.

The statue, worth about $40,000, has since been recovered by police and is being assessed for damage.
