A mother punched her ex-partner’s cousin in the face after she drank alcohol on her property for days and refused to leave, a court has heard.

Diane Griffen, 37, appeared before Liverpool Local Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to assault following an incident at her Liverpool apartment earlier this year, which left a woman with a swollen lip.

Agreed facts tendered to the court reveal on April 23, the victim and a witness were drinking in Griffen’s and her ex-partner’s garage before moving to the balcony.

“Griffen walked towards the unit balcony, opened the sliding door where a verbal altercation occurred between her and the victim,” facts state.

The mother-of-one punched the victim’s face with a clenched fist and caused a minor laceration and swelling to her lower lip.

Police were called to the apartment, and the victim advised officers that she and the witness had been drinking alcohol throughout the day.

Griffen was arrested, taken to Liverpool station, and declined an electronically recorded interview after telling police: “‘I’ve already told you guys what happened, I hit her, and it is what it is. I’m not gonna lie to you guys.”

Griffen told the court she punched the victim after telling her repeatedly to leave her home.

“Herself and the other one were drinking at my place for days, and I asked them to leave and stop,” she said.

Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim said while he understood Griffen was the sole carer for her child, her actions were inexcusable.

Griffen was convicted and sentenced to a conditional release order for 12 months and given an apprehended domestic violence order for two years prohibiting her from stalking or assaulting the victim.
