Australia Day awards for Liverpool achievers as new citizens welcomed

Inspiring individuals, community groups and new citizens were recognised on Australia Day for contributing to the fabric of Liverpool.

Inspiring individuals, community groups and new citizens were recognised on Australia Day for contributing to the fabric of Liverpool.

The annual Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremony was held at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre to celebrate local achievers and welcome 41 new citizens.

Liverpool’s 2019 Australia Day ambassador and children’s author Susanne Gervay OAM presented the certificates alongside Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller.

Community volunteer Kerrie Oxlade was named Citizen of the Year for her work with organisations including Quota International, Liverpool Lions Club, Marconi Cycling Club, Sydney Airport Ladies Association and Liverpool Meals on Wheels.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller praised her work within the community.

“Kerrie has juggled duties across her many volunteer leadership roles with great pride and has been an inspiration to the people she has come into contact with,” Cr Waller said.

Amity College student Zeynep Nevzat was named Young Citizen of the Year for inspiring western Sydney youth through art, while Moorebank Liverpool District Hockey Club volunteer Kevin Flack was presented the Senior Citizen Award for his contributions to the local hockey scene.

Local achievers also included artist and educator Tracy Smith, who received the Cultural and Arts Award; University of NSW’s Associate Professor Susan Connor, who received the health award for her work as an advocate for patients with inflammatory bowel disease; and Judith Banks, who was presented the Macquarie Award in recognition of her charity work.

The Fraser Environment Award was given to the Youth of Collimore Park and Yu Ling Cui for their contributions to the Collimore Park and Clinches Pond environment groups respectively.

Moorebank Liverpool District Hockey Club received the Sports Award.
