An 11-storey housing development proposed by Anglicare has been approved for Liverpool.

The development at 9-15 Northumberland St, Liverpool, will include a mixture of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, as well as a respite day care facility, coffee kiosk, indoor and outdoor communal spaces, children’s pay areas, carparking and Anglicare management facilities.

The project, designed by architectural firm Group GSA, was recently approved by the Sydney Western City Planning Panel.

It will include 28 residential strata units, 109 social and affordable housing units managed by Anglicare, and 70 carparking spaces.

According to the council’s e-planning website, the estimated cost of work will be upwards of $55 million.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said housing affordability was a “major concern” across Australia.

“We know many of our residents face serious housing issues,” she said.

“This development is a huge win both for the community at large but also for the many individuals who will benefit from the modern, affordable housing it offers. And it is especially good news for older women, who we know are increasingly affected by a crisis in housing.”

Anglicare chief operating officer Bill Farrand said there were more than 3200 people over the age of 55 living in private rental accommodation in Liverpool with an individual income of less than $500 a week.

“Due to the substantial size and growth of Liverpool and increases in the cost of housing in Sydney, the number of people in the area in need of affordable rental accommodation options has increased substantially over the last 10 years,” he said.

“Anglicare’s development at Liverpool will seek to provide high quality affordable housing as well as support services for residents. We also want to create an enabling and secure environment where residents can foster meaningful connections with the wider community.”

Local Anglican church, St Luke’s, has thrown its support behind the development.

“St Luke’s Liverpool is interested in this project because it is a practical way the Sydney Anglican Church through the agency of Anglicare can make a real difference in the area,” senior minister Stuart Pearson said.
