Premier: Western Sydney Aerotropolis will give NSW ‘the edge’ on jobs growth

The future city being planned around Western Sydney Airport will take the state to a “new level”, the Premier told business leaders in Warwick Farm.

An agribusiness facility with a digital and freight logistics hub that will deliver fresh produce from NSW to international plates in less than 36 hours is among a number of huge projects lined up for the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian outlined the plans while giving her third State of the Region address on Thursday in Warwick Farm, with business leaders from across western Sydney gathering to hear the government’s plans and priorities for the region.

Ms Berejiklian said her government was investing at least $30 billion of infrastructure in western Sydney over the next four years.

And what would give NSW the edge on jobs growth was the future city being planned around Western Sydney Airport, she said.

“This special precinct we’re building in western Sydney, the aerotropolis, is just taking our state to a new level,” she said.

Making reference to her recent trade mission in Britain and Germany, Ms Berejiklian said her government had exceeded its target of signing 10 memorandums of understanding with local and international companies to invest in the airport precinct, locking in 17 agreements so far.

They included an agreement with German logistics company DB Schenker to build a hi-tech, bio-secure agribusiness facility that will see products and produce from western Sydney delivered to international markets in less than 36 hours.

“What they’ll be doing at the airport precinct is ensuring that when the goods and services or fresh produce arrives from Western NSW or the Central West or from other parts of Greater Sydney … within 36 hours that produce will be heading to markets across southeast Asia,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Munich-based company GE Additive, a world leader in 3D printing, will also have a presence in the aerotropolis.

“This means that in the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, we’ll be having a company that will produce anything from medical devices, hip replacements to parts for jet rockets,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The future for western Sydney is linked to our state’s future — is linked to our nation’s future.”

At last year’s State of the Region address, Ms Berejiklian announced an Australian-first single-campus ‘multiversity’ would be built in the aerotropolis.
