It is the size of about six football fields, but everything found inside Amazon Australia’s fulfilment centre in southwest Sydney is organised using a simple system. Take a look here.

At Amazon Australia’s fulfilment centre in Sydney, space is everything.

The 43,000 sqm facility, located on Centenary Ave in Moorebank, opened in August 2018, its location offering easy access to the M5 and M7 motorways.

With a footprint equivalent to that of about six football fields, the facility is nearly double the size of the company’s Melbourne fulfilment centre.

The Leader was invited on a tour of the Moorebank hub, which employs about 200 staff.

Amazon Australia’s 14 leadership principles are displayed on the centre’s interior walls, with one in particular held in high regard by staff — customer obsession.

With so many moving parts in the vast facility, safety is key for workers, who adhere to rigorous safety protocols.

Items — which can be Amazon stock or products supplied by Fulfilment by Amazon users and third-party sellers — are stored in two different areas, depending on size.

The guiding principle is straightforward, with staff operating on a ‘random stow’ system that makes use of any available space within the warehouse, such that instant cup noodles can be found in the same bay as books and nappies.

The packing process is also underpinned by efficiency; customer orders are scanned by staff and a computer system identifies which size box is required to pack the items.

Amidst all the activity within the centre there are also pops of colour, with a mural designed by local artists Daniel Cydes and Phu Nguyen featuring NSW flora and fauna.

Staff are now gearing up for Prime Day, a two-day only global shopping event exclusive to Prime members.
